10May2001 MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL FOOD AND BEVERAGE FAIR FROM JULY 12-15.

The third Malaysia International Food & Beverage Exhibition 2001 (MIFB 2001) to be held here from July 12-15, would be a good opportunity for local food and agriculture-based industries to promote their products and expertise at an international level.
In a statement today, event organiser Utusan Events Management Sdn Bhd said the exhibition, themed "Building Business Partnerships" would also coincide with the Tourism Ministry's tropical fruits promotional campaign.
"The event would also compliment the government's efforts to reduce the current high rate of food imports by Malaysia," said executive director of Utusan Events, Latifah Hamzah.
"With an expected growth of three percent per annum, the agriculture sector has been allocated RM7.9 billion under the Eight Malaysia Plan which will help transform the agriculture sector into a modern, dynamic and competitive industry," she said in the statement.
Emphasis has also been placed on increasing food production to cater for the growing demand in the domestic market while reducing the import bill, she said.
On the exhibition, she said: "We have managed to secure about 50 percent of the total 4000 square metres floor space so far and hope to attract more local participants this year as our focus is more aligned towards creating a conducive trading platform of international status."
The exhibition MIFB 2001 would be featuring the products of some 40 food and technology related companies and industries from Malaysia, Australia, India, Eygpt and Saudi Arabia covering categories like frozen food, seafood, confectionary and herbal food.
"We hope to confirm the participation of a delegation from South Africa soon," Latifah said.
In conjunction with MIFB 2001, an interactive workshop on food safety would be also conducted by food experts from Food Industry Training Pty Limited (FIT), she said.
Among topics that would be covered in the seminar would include the HACCP system (which is established to ensure consisteny in food quality and safety), New Product Development and Handling and Food and Fruit Marketing Trends.

10May2001 Thailand To Organize ASEAN Plus Three Conference On Food Security.

Thailand will host a conference on regional food security between member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and three powerful East Asian countries, known as the ASEAN plus three, in July, a senior Thai official said on Thursday.
Assistant Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives Amphon Kittiamphon was quoted by the Thai News Agency (TNA) as saying that senior officials from ASEAN countries and their counterparts from Japan, China, and South Korea, who attended a recent regional conference on agriculture and forestry, agreed that the ASEAN plus three conference be held again in Thailand.
The conference was expected to come out with an agreed framework on the improvement of buffer stock systems in the region, through adjustment of management mechanism and farm swap schemes, he disclosed.
The framework will be focused on rice buffer stocks in an effort to ensure effective management of rice stocks, which has traditionally been feeding the majority of Asians.
The senior official revealed that the existing rice policy, which has been used for more than two decades, lacks buffer stock systems that secure the actual amount of rice in stock. Rather, it has been clung to an estimated amount of 80,000 tons.
Japan, China, and South Korea, the new counterparts of ASEAN nations, as Amphon pointed out, would provide the helpful input in mapping out the new framework ensuring the food security in the region.
Rice export also constitutes a major revenue of the Asian agricultural sector, and rice produced by Asian countries totals almost three-forth of rice supply in the world market.
